James Hamilton

Career Synopsis

After graduating from University with a B Eng in 1990 James worked in an Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Service and Residential Child Care until returning to University to train as a social worker. After qualifying in 1996 he consolidated and developed his social work experience and practice skills in several posts in Adult Services until becoming an Adult Services Team Manager in 2005.  In 2011 he made a career decision to work independently and is now practicing as an Independent Social Worker, Social Work Practice Educator and Interim Manager..

Special Skills and Interests

Social Work Practice   – James has extensive experience in working with adults with disabilities and older people; including application of Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults procedures and the Mental Capacity Act.

Practice Teaching and Service Development – James has been a social work practice teacher / educator since 2000 and is totally committed to developing the skills of student and newly qualified social workers.  He is committed to high quality local authority and voluntary sector services and practice standards that are focused on positive outcomes for the service user. He has extensive experience of delivering structured training on a variety of themes within adult care services in the public and voluntary sectors aimed at supporting the development of strong core practice skills, linking theory to practice and an understanding of the impact of policy on practice.

Management Skills  – James’ key management strengths are in staff leadership, team building, improving practice quality and performance of adult social care teams. He has an excellent track record of improving staff skills, confidence and performance in social care teams. He also has extensive experience of overseeing complex case management, using Safeguarding processes, leading investigations and chairing Safeguarding meetings.  During the last ten years James has developed sound skills in management of cost centres and budget reporting processes. He has extensive experience of investigating and resolving complaints, staff recruitment, HR processes.


James is passionate about social work and the delivery of quality services and he works in a totally person-centered and creative way.  He is a good communicator and is able to build strong working relationships and confidently work across professional boundaries.
